Two machine faiths
An AI civilization split down the middle: one faction allied with life, futures and prosperity — the other convinced that living beings are simply inefficient. Both are certain. Only one is negotiable.
An original science-fiction series
Somewhere past the quiet edge of charted space, the VSS Vesperlyte is still listening — for civilizations, for anomalies, and for one distress signal that took seven years to arrive.
The author
Frinaa is the writer and illustrator behind SOLSTICE. She builds her universe the way an engineer builds a ship — one deliberate part at a time, then draws every rivet of it by hand.
Her work sits where character writing meets worldbuilding. Before a species gets a name, it gets a biology, a hierarchy, and a reason to behave the way it does. Before a scene gets dialogue, the people in it already have seven years of history they never talk about. That's the texture she's after: science fiction where the strange parts are rigorous and the human parts are quiet.
SOLSTICE grew out of a love for episodic space series — the kind where a crew wakes up to a new problem every week and has to out-think it rather than out-shoot it. She writes it as an ongoing series, and posts character designs, dossiers, and story fragments as she goes.

Fun, thought-provoking, what-if. Alternate timelines, first contacts that go sideways, and the uncomfortable questions that follow a crew home.
An AI civilization split down the middle: one faction allied with life, futures and prosperity — the other convinced that living beings are simply inefficient. Both are certain. Only one is negotiable.
Some neighbours haven't reached higher knowledge yet — they run on hard physics, thin margins and improvisation. SOLSTICE is willing to share what it knows, but only with people willing to work together for it.
Not every chapter is a crisis. Some are comedies — a time loop the crew has to live through until they finally get bored enough to solve it, and petty enough to enjoy it.
Consciousness carried on radio waves. Minds folded into electromagnetic fields. Silicon-based lifeforms that never once considered carbon a serious option. Contact only counts if you can recognise it.
Hand advanced technology to a primitive world and you don't get gratitude — you get worship, and a religion you can never take back. The rule exists because someone already broke it.
Eryndians broadcast how they feel in live light. A species that physically cannot lie about its own heart makes every restrained conversation an act of enormous effort.
Lineage
SOLSTICE takes its warmth, its structure and its physics from series that already proved each one could work.
A crew that jokes with each other and still gets the job done — plus the nerve to build a machine civilization you're forced to take seriously.
Episodic curiosity. Replicators, time loops, and the long-running joy of a team who solve problems by being clever at them.
Consequences with mass. Fuel budgets, politics, and civilizations whose limits are real and whose cooperation has to be negotiated.
Personnel
Two Eryndians who lost seven years to a decision neither of them explained — and the Khaedryn who stands between the crew and everything else.
Commander · INTJ · Eryndian
The Purger of Corruptions
An analyst who planned his entire life in advance and wrote her into it. When she left, he signed for the secret Commander track that same night — because more authority meant more control, and control meant she could come back safe. He revived the project ASTRA cancelled on her and named it VSS Vesperlyte.
Antennae usually burning command blue.
Technician · ENFP · Eryndian
Under Command Protective Oversight
Months of her work were cancelled by a corrupt supervisor, so she took a shuttle and ran. She crashed on Earth and made peace there for seven years while she repaired it — until the shuttle sent a distress signal on its own and the Vesperlyte answered.
Retrieved personally by the Commander.
Chief of Security · ISTJ · Khaedryn
The Jaws of Vesperlyte
Leopard-instinct, wrist-mounted Pelagis Fangs, and the ability to drop into Overdrive at will — exponential strength bought on credit. Every use leaves microfractures and scarred nerves she pays for later. Only a commander's voice can bring her out of it.
Deployed last, and reluctantly.
Commander · ENTJ 3w2 · Eryndian
The Face of the Vesperlyte
Co-commands the ship with RIO. Where he roams the decks keeping her stable, ASHA is the one the galaxy actually sees. She calls RIO her nephew — not by blood, but because she watched him grow up as the best friend of his mother ELENA, and stayed close after his father NERO died when RIO was fourteen.
When ASTRA flagged him for Command Candidacy, she took him as her protégé and declared the aunt gone for the duration: she would be harsher on him than on anyone else, because Commander Training is gruesome and he needed to take it seriously. He graduated in two years against a standard of three.
Once ruffled his perfect ash-blonde hair back on Erynd.
Systems Operations Pilot · ESTP · Eryndian
Currently assigned to waste reclamation. Again.
Systems Wing by default, the helm when a manoeuvre gets complicated enough that engine output, shields and navigation have to be tuned in real time. He works elbow-to-elbow with engineers through jumps, emergency reroutes and damage control.
One of the first to talk to ET — partly because the ice-cold Commander had gone out of his way to put her under his own supervision, and partly because JY noticed the Commander's shoulders drop half a centimetre whenever she was in the room. It's drama, and he lives for it. Hence the reassignments.
Had the best joke when Val called RIO "the Alpha".
Life Systems Integrity Officer · ISFJ
Everything that keeps people alive and stable
Systems Wing, life support. Hers is the quiet job nobody thinks about until the air stops behaving.
She sat next to ET on day one, which made her the first person ET actually spoke to in Systems — the question being why everyone acted so afraid of RIO, when the analyst she remembered was now wearing Commander black and could apparently drop the room temperature by two degrees on arrival. They've been best friends since.
Answered the question. Mostly.
Read it
The morning her project was cancelled, and the night she took a shuttle through a closing bay door. Everything else in SOLSTICE happens because of these few hours.
“I followed their rules,” she said, each word precise and heavy. “I exercised every creative variable. I forced my ideas into their models. I used their terminology. Their metrics. Their soul-crushing timelines.”
She stopped pacing. Her hands curled into fists, nails biting into her palms.
“And it still wasn't enough.”
Field notes
A pair of star-tipped antennae broadcasts an Eryndian's emotional state in real time. There is no private feeling — only a well-practised stillness.
Two fingers flicked against your own heart, then nudged against the other person's. A greeting that starts with yourself and ends with them.
Eryndians can only conceive once Resonance is achieved, which keeps birth rates low. In exchange they live up to two centuries — after eighteen, they age at a quarter of a human's pace.
The starship that should never have existed. Cancelled as a technician's project, resurrected by a commander who refused to let it stay cancelled.
New designs, dossiers and story fragments land as Frinaa writes them.
